What does a potter do professionally?

I've always loved art and ceramics, so I'm curious about what a professional potter does. Is it mainly creating pieces for sale, or do they also work on custom orders or art pieces? Is it hard to make a living?

Professional potters spend their time in a variety of ways, depending on their focus and business model. Many create functional ceramics, such as bowls, mugs, or plates, which they sell through their own websites, online platforms like Etsy, and at craft fairs or in local stores. It's common for a potter running their own business to do every aspect of production themselves, from creating the piece, to glazing, firing, marketing, and shipping.

Some potters specialize in specific types of pottery, like raku, or work on larger sculptural pieces. In these cases, their markets might be more niche and the materials or equipment they use could be more specialized.

Custom orders can also be a significant portion of a potter's work. These could be large orders for restaurants or custom pieces for individual customers.
