Stage manager responsibilities in theater?

I've been involved in high school theater production and heard about stage management. What does a stage manager do? Is this a career that requires specific training or a college degree?

In the world of theater, a stage manager is essentially the central coordinator who ensures smooth running of both rehearsals and performances. The breadth of their responsibilities varies depending on the size and nature of the production but typically includes the following:

1. Communication: The stage manager is a primary liaison between the director, actors, designers, and technicians, ensuring everyone has the information they need.
