What is the official job title for a software engineer?

I'm really into coding and thinking of pursuing a career in tech. When someone works as a software engineer, is that their official job title or is it part of a larger category? What are the variations?

The term "Software Engineer" is indeed an official job title for individuals who design, write, and test computer software. However, the tech industry is diverse and dynamic, with numerous specialized roles that fall under the larger umbrella of software engineering.

Software Developer: This title is often used interchangeably with software engineer, but typically focuses more on the creation and testing of software. Developers are often responsible for orchestrating the entire development process, from the initial concept to the final product.

Front-End Developer: A front-end developer works on the client side of software, focusing on the user interface and experience. They use languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build the parts of software or websites that users interact with.

Back-End Developer: A back-end developer works on the server side of software, building and managing the technology that powers the entire system, the stuff that users do not see.

Full Stack Developer: A full-stack developer is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They have a comprehensive understanding of all stages of software development and can work on multiple layers of an application.

DevOps Engineer: This role involves both development and operational duties to automate and monitor the process of software production, which leads to improved efficiency and reduced errors.

Each one of these roles would require differing technical skill sets but mostly fall within the scope of software engineering. You can certainly choose to specialize in a particular area according to your interests and skills.
