What does a surgical tech do for work?

I'm interested in possibly going into the medical field right after high school and heard about the surgical tech position. Could someone explain what the job of a surgical tech involves day-to-day?

A surgical technologist, sometimes referred to as a scrub tech or operating room tech, has a key role in the operation room during surgical procedures. They play an essential part in ensuring the surgical procedure runs smoothly and safely. Some of their primary responsibilities might include:

1. Preparation of the Operating Room: Before a surgical procedure, a surgical tech is responsible for arranging surgical equipment, sterilizing the area, and making sure necessary tools are counted and accounted for. This includes arranging surgical instruments, ensuring machinery and monitors function properly, and preparing sterile solutions and medications for surgeons and nurses.

2. Patient Assistance: They often assist in preparing patients for surgery. This could involve moving the patient to the operating room, cleaning and disinfecting incision sites on the patient's body, and in some cases, transporting specimens for lab analysis.

3. Procedure Assistance: During a surgical procedure, the surgical tech helps by passing instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. They are tasked with keeping an account of all items used during surgery to ensure nothing is left inside the patient.

4. Post-Surgery Support: After surgery, surgical techs play an important role in dressing and bandaging the operated area, helping move patients to recovery rooms, and cleaning and restocking the operating room for the next procedure.
