Is UC San Diego a top choice for computer science?

I've heard UC San Diego has a good computer science program. Does anyone know if it's considered one of the best? I'm curious about what makes it stand out and if current students really like it there.

Indeed, UC San Diego is highly regarded for its computer science program. It is typically ranked among the top computer science programs, especially for its research output. The Jacobs School of Engineering, which houses the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, provides a wide array of resources and opportunities for students. These include research opportunities, internships, and a very active ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) chapter. Students are exposed to vibrant technology and entrepreneurship scene in the greater San Diego area.

The curriculum at UC San Diego is also top-notch, covering fundamental aspects of computer science such as algorithms, data structures, computer architecture, and software engineering. The faculty includes leaders in areas like machine learning, data science, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics. Many students also appreciate the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary studies, applying computer science to fields like biology, medicine, physics, and the arts.

At the undergraduate level, you can choose from a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science, or a Computer Science Minor. This allows for some flexibility depending on students' individual career goals and interests.

On the flip side, like many popular programs, class sizes can be large, especially in lower-division courses, and classes can sometimes be difficult to get into. However, this tends to level out as students advance into upper-level, more specialized courses.

Overall, current students appreciate the strong sense of community, robust course offerings, and diverse options for in-depth study. Before making a decision, though, it's beneficial to visit the campus (if possible), get to know the culture, and talk to current students. It's also important to ensure that the program's strengths align with your own career interests and goals.
