I’m really into environmental science and want to make it my major in college. What are the top colleges for studying environmental science, particularly those with great research opportunities and active student organizations?

Sure, let's dive right into exploring some top-notch universities with standout environmental science programs.

Firstly, consider Stanford University which is renowned for its Earth Systems Program. This program merges principles from biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics with their applications in solving environmental issues. Stanford's Woods Institute for the Environment also offers extensive research opportunities.

UC Berkeley also has an excellent environmental science program, known as the Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management (ESPM) major. They take an interdisciplinary approach as well, combining natural science, social science, and humanities to tackle environmental problems. Research opportunities abound as well, especially given their multiple dedicated centers and initiatives.

Duke University is another great option. They have a distinct focus on environmental policy and economics. Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment provides students with hands-on fieldwork experiences and encourages collaborative research.

For the east coast, consider Yale University. Their Environmental Studies program is vibrant and research-focused, with students often engaging in unique projects of their own design. Their program also encourages an interdisciplinary approach to environmental problems.

Lastly, don’t forget about Middlebury College if you are considering smaller institutes. Their program is known for its focus on student-led research, and the college’s setting in rural Vermont provides extensive opportunities for field studies.

Apart from considering the specific program, also take into account each university's overall culture, cost, and location to make sure it's the right fit for you. And remember, information is key, so don’t hesitate to reach out to students or faculty from these colleges to get a firsthand account of what studying environmental science there is like.
