Can anyone explain what a vocational specialist does? I'm trying to learn more about this career path, especially if it might be a good fit for me after high school.

A vocational specialist, also known as a vocational rehabilitation counselor or career counselor, is a professional who assists individuals, often with disabilities or health conditions, with identifying and pursuing career or employment opportunities suited to their strengths and circumstances. They work with clients to identify their skills, abilities, and interests while also considering any limitations they may have due to their health or disability.

In a typical day, a vocational specialist might conduct assessments, collaborate with employers, and guide clients through job searching and application processes. This could include help in creating a compelling resume, practicing interview skills, and researching appropriate job openings.

Apart from job placement, vocational specialists also follow up with clients once they're employed to ensure the working environment is conducive to their well-being and the job is a good fit. They can also work with employers to identify necessary accommodations that can help the client be successful in the job.

Vocational specialists generally need at least a bachelor's degree in a field like psychology, social work, or counseling. Some positions, especially those dealing with more complex cases, may require a master's degree.
