What's it like being a ramp agent?

A typical day for a ramp agent involves a variety of tasks revolving around inbound and outbound aircraft. Duties include handling, staging, and transporting cargo or baggage, performing safety checks on the airplane and ground equipment, signaling aircraft for parking or departure, cleaning the interior of the plane, and sometimes even deicing the aircraft during winter months.

It's a physically demanding role as it requires frequent lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing of heavy luggage, cargo, or mail weighing up to 70lbs. this can increase to 100lbs when team-lifting. Ramp agents often work outside in all weather conditions, so resilience to elements like heat, cold, rain or snow is essential. Additionally, the job involves being on your feet for extended periods and bending or kneeling to secure baggage and cargo.

The role can be fast-paced, with high pressure to meet strict deadlines for flight departures. Safety is also paramount as you'll be working around machinery and aircraft, so there are strict protocols to follow.
