What does a health care assistant do?

I'm exploring career options in healthcare and heard about healthcare assistants. What do they typically do, and are there any certifications or training I should focus on during high school to prepare for this?

Healthcare Assistants (HCAs), also known as patient care technicians or nursing assistants, play an integral role in patient care within the healthcare system. Their primary responsibilities often include direct patient care, such as monitoring vital signs, maintaining patient hygiene, assisting with meal times, and helping with mobility.

Common tasks may entail preparing patients for tests or surgeries, keeping patients' surroundings clean, and being a companion to patients who may need emotional support or help with daily tasks. Furthermore, in certain healthcare facilities, HCAs may have administrative responsibilities like keeping records and arranging appointments.

In terms of training and preparation during high school, you could look into taking classes in Biology or Health Sciences, if they are available at your school. This can provide you with a solid foundation in understanding human body systems and health issues. Volunteering at a local clinic or hospital could provide first-hand experience and also demonstrate your long-term commitment to healthcare to future schools or employers.

Some high schools and vocational schools offer Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) programs which can lead to certification. It's a highly recognized qualification that may give you an edge when applying for HCA roles or related programs at colleges or vocational schools.

In addition to these, many interpersonal skills such as empathy, communication, and teamwork are vital in this role. Building these soft skills can be as important as gaining technical skills and knowledge.
