What does a sergeant do in the army?

I'm considering joining the military after high school, and I'm trying to understand the different roles. What are the responsibilities of a sergeant in the army? Is it a position I could aim for?

In the U.S. Army, the rank of Sergeant is typically the entry level of the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) ranks. NCOs hold a position of authority appointed by a Commissioned Officer, or an officer who has received a commission from the President of the United States. Some of the responsibilities of a sergeant might include:

1. Leading soldiers: As a sergeant, you'd lead a squad, typically comprising of 9 to 10 soldiers. You'd be responsible for their well-being, training, and discipline.

2. Training: You may also be responsible for providing training to both your squad and possibly junior sergeants. This can include physical training, drills, and professional development.

3. Administrative duties: Sergeants are often involved in administrative duties like documenting training, filing reports, and managing team logistics.

4. Implementing orders: Sergeants are usually tasked with implementing the orders from their superior officers and they ensure these orders are carried out by the soldiers in their squad.

Keep in mind the specific roles and duties can vary a good deal depending on the unit, field, and geographic location. Generally, the path to becoming a sergeant would involve enlisting in the Army, going through Basic Combat Training, serving in an entry level position, and then rising through the ranks. It's definitely a position you could aim for, but it will take time and commitment, with the process typically taking several years based on performance, leadership ability, and available positions.
