What does a Travel Nurse's job look like?

I've heard about travel nursing and it sounds intriguing! Can someone tell me more about what a travel nurse actually does? Are there specific tasks that make it different from regular nursing?

Travel nursing is a unique and exciting career path within the nursing field. It involves taking on short-term nursing assignments in various locations across the country, and even internationally in some cases. Travel nurses typically work on contract for healthcare staffing agencies, filling in where hospitals and medical facilities have nursing shortages—this can often occur in high-demand specialties like emergency room nursing, labor and delivery nursing or intensive care nursing.

Each travel nursing assignment can last anywhere between 8 to 26 weeks, although 13 weeks is quite standard. During this time, travel nurses are employed by the hospital or medical facility, working alongside permanent staff to provide patient care, administer medications, and perform typical nursing duties. The main distinction in their role is their adaptability to different work environments, as they might be working in a large hospital in one contract and then a rural community health clinic in the next.

Travel nurses are often required to hit the ground running and quickly adapt to new teams, protocols, and systems. They tend to be flexible, outgoing, and resilient. On the upside, they get to experience a variety of work settings, learn from different health care systems, and explore new locations during their time off.

Just like regular nurses, travel nurses need to be registered nurses (RNs), and they often have additional credentials or specialized experience in a particular field.

But it's worth noting that while travel nursing can be exciting and rewarding, it presents its own set of challenges, such as the emotional toll of frequently leaving behind friends, missing family at home, or adapting to different work norms.

Nevertheless, many nurses find the opportunities for travel, exploration, and professional growth make it a rewarding choice!
