What Does a Stage Manager Do?

I'm involved in theater at school and considering working backstage. Can anyone explain what a stage manager's role involves? How critical are they to a production, and is this a viable career path?

In theater, the role of the stage manager is incredibly important. They form the backbone of any theatrical production and play a key role in ensuring everything runs smoothly from pre-production to closing night.

A stage manager serves as the link between the production team (directors, designers, producers, etc.) and the performance team (actors, musicians, etc.). They coordinate rehearsals, make sure everyone is updated about schedule changes, and manage the logistics of the performances.

During rehearsals, the stage manager often documents blocking (the movements actors make on the stage), notes down lighting or sound cues and circulates any script changes to the team. In essence, they create and maintain a 'prompt book', which serves as the master copy of the script and includes all the crucial information needed for the performance.

Often, the stage manager takes on the role of the director during performances, using the prompt book to cue technical elements like lights, sounds, and set changes. They also ensure the health and safety of all participants, handling any emergencies that might occur.

As for the career aspect, yes, it is a viable career path. Many people who start in theater as stage managers go on to have successful careers, either continuing as stage managers for larger, more prestigious productions or moving into roles like producing or directing. However, be aware that it can be a demanding job with irregular and long hours, and working conditions can vary greatly depending on the size of the production.

It's great to see you're considering this - having a love for theater and an ability to manage logistics and people under pressure are key elements for a successful stage manager. While it's often a behind-the-scenes type of role, anyone who has been part of a theatrical production knows how pivotal a good stage manager is to the success of the show. Best of luck!
