What are the requirements to study law in the USA?

I'm in high school and thinking about becoming a lawyer. I'd love to know what the requirements are to study law in the USA. Do I need certain undergrad majors or test scores?

In the United States, you cannot directly study law at an undergraduate level. Instead, to become a lawyer, you first complete an undergraduate degree in any field of your choice. No specific major is required. However, majors such as political science, history, philosophy, economics, or English can be useful due to their focus on reading, analyzing, and argument structures.

Your undergraduate GPA will be an important consideration if you decide to apply to law school. Aim for strong academic performance in whatever major you choose. Also become involved in activities related to your career goals, such as mock trial teams or debate clubs, or doing internships at law firms or other relevant organizations.

Upon completing your undergraduate degree, you apply for law school. Most law schools in the USA require you to take the LSAT (Law School Admission Test). This standardized test measures reading comprehension, logical, and verbal reasoning proficiencies.

The LSAT score, along with your undergraduate GPA, recommendations, and personal statement, will be heavily weighed in law school admissions. Once you're in law school, you'll spend about three years studying law specifically. After you graduate, to practice law, you'll need to pass the bar exam in the state you wish to practice in.

Remember, this is a general route many aspiring lawyers take. Individual paths can vary widely. Be sure to research the specifics of the law schools you're interested in to get the most accurate, detailed information about their application processes and requirements.
