What does a financial broker do in their job?

I've been reading about jobs in finance and came across the term 'financial broker.' Can anyone clarify what a financial broker does? Do they mainly deal with buying and selling stocks, or is there more to it? Any advice on how to get started in this field?

A financial broker is a professional who acts as an intermediary between buyers and sellers in financial transactions. Their responsibilities can range from buying and selling stocks and bonds on behalf of clients, to providing advice on investment opportunities and helping with tax and estate planning.

While buying and selling securities is a big part of a broker's job, there is indeed more to it. Brokers often meet with their clients to discuss financial goals, and then conduct research to recommend suitable financial products. They also monitor financial market trends to provide up-to-date advice, and handle paperwork related to investments.

Financial brokers can specialize in various areas, such as equities, bonds, FOREX, and commodities. Some brokers cater to retail clients, while others work with institutional investors.

To get started in this field, a degree in finance, business, or economics is typically required, though it's possible to break into the field with a degree in a different subject if you have strong analytical skills and a keen interest in finance. Most important is getting certified as a broker. In the US, for instance, you’ll need to pass the General Securities Representative Exam (Series 7) and the Uniform Securities State Law Examination (Series 63 or 66).

As well, brokers need to have excellent communication skills, because they spend a lot of time talking to clients and negotiating deals. Persistence and the ability to cope under pressure are also essential traits, given the competitive and fast-paced nature of the financial markets.

Lastly, it's worth noting that getting started in the field can involve a lot of hard work and long hours. But the upside is that successful brokers can earn a lucrative income, and there can be a lot of satisfaction in helping clients grow their wealth.
