What is the minimum age requirement for getting a job?

I'm a high school junior and considering getting a part-time job. What's the minimum age requirement for most jobs, and are there exceptions if I'm still in school? Just trying to figure out my options.

The exact age requirement for getting a job will vary, largely based on the laws of each state, as well as on specific company policies. However, generally speaking, the minimum age to work in the United States is 14 years old. This is according to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) which sets rules for youth employment. At this age, you can typically start working certain part-time jobs like retail, grocery store work, or customer service roles.

However, there are limitations on the hours students can work while school is in session: workers aged 14-15 can only work 3 hours on school days and 18 hours total in any given school week. On non-school days, 14- and 15-year-olds can work 8 hours per day. During the summer and other school breaks, they can work up to 40 hours weekly. For 16- and 17-year-olds, there are typically no hour limits.

In some special cases, if you're under 16, you might be able to work. For example, if it's a family business (and your immediate family owns it), or if it's a television, movie, or theater job, then there might be different rules in place.

However, different states may have individual regulations that can affect these general rules, and certain positions, such as those in construction or driving, may require the worker to be 18 or over. I would recommend checking the specific age regulations for your state and any specific jobs you're considering to be certain.

Some companies also set their own minimum age requirement for their positions. For instance, a company may require that employees be at least 16 years old.

Lastly, keep in mind that even if you can legally work, you'll want to balance work with your school responsibilities and activities. Work can be a great way to gain experience, but it's also important to make sure it doesn't detract from your schooling and other important commitments.
