What's It Like Being a College Professor?

I'm interested in potentially becoming a college professor one day. Could someone explain what the job involves and what daily tasks a professor might have? How's the work-life balance?

Being a college professor is a multifaceted role that goes beyond delivering lectures. Some key tasks vary depending on the field of study, but typically involve research, creating course syllabi, preparing lectures, grading assignments, advising and mentoring students, and participating in committee work for their department and the broader institution. Professors also need to keep up with developments in their field, which often involves reading scholarly articles, attending conferences, and continually learning.

On a daily basis, a professor might lecture, hold office hours for students who need extra help, meet with graduate students, conduct original research, write grants, attend meetings, and respond to lots of emails!

As for work-life balance, it can vary greatly and depends a lot on discipline and institution. Professors might have more flexibility in their schedule compared to a typical 9 to 5 job since they can often choose when to do research or grade papers. While it's not uncommon to see professors working late or on weekends, especially when they're working towards tenure, many appreciate the independence and control they have over their schedule.

However, it's worth noting that professors, especially those in research-intensive fields, might spend a lot of time outside the typical working hours conducting research, writing papers, or applying for grants. The pressure can be particularly high for untenured professors who are trying to publish their work in prestigious journals and secure funding for their research.

Last but not least, being a professor means contributing to the creation and dissemination of knowledge which can be highly rewarding, but also a great responsibility. It is a profession that typically demands a strong commitment and passion for your field of study.
