Advice on pursuing biomedical engineering in the USA?

Biomedical engineering sounds fascinating, and I'm considering it for college in the U.S. Which schools have strong programs, and are there any special prerequisites or experiences I should have?

For Biomedical Engineering (BME), some of the prominent universities known for excellent programs are Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

As for prerequisites and experiences, most engineering programs don't have specific prerequisites beyond what's already required for admission into the college or university. This typically includes a strong background in mathematics (through calculus), natural sciences (especially Physics and Chemistry), and English.

However, universities appreciate seeing high school extracurricular activities that align with the prospective major. Gaining experience and showing an interest in the biomedical field can really strengthen your application. Consider joining or starting school clubs that focus on science and engineering, looking for internships or part-time jobs in engineering-related fields, or participating in science and engineering competitions, to name a few.

One thing to keep in mind is that Biomedical Engineering is a challenging field, with courses often covering a wide range of topics from biology and chemistry to physics and computer science. It's important to be confident in your math and science skills, as these will be integral to your success in this field.

In terms of course selection in high school, Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Calculus, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry would be particularly useful.

Finally, remember to read the admissions websites of the colleges you're interested in to determine their specific course recommendations and prerequisites for engineering majors. While they might not require more than the university's general admissions prerequisites, some may recommend or even require additional coursework or experiences.
