Where to study cinematography in the USA?

I'm passionate about cinematography, and I'm trying to find universities in the USA that offer top-notch programs. Which schools have the best facilities or connections for aspiring cinematographers?

There are several universities in the USA known for their robust Cinematography or Film production programs. Here are a few options for you to consider:

1. University of Southern California (USC): USC's School of Cinematic Arts is one of the most prestigious film schools in the country. The BFA in Cinematic Arts, Film & Television Production admits only a few students each year, making it both selective and high-quality. The department is also well connected to the industry, which is beneficial for internships and post-grad opportunities.

2. University of California Los Angeles (UCLA): Known for its School of Theater, Film, and Television, UCLA routinely ranks among the top film schools. The department offers both a BA in Film and Television, both of which cover cinematography.

3. New York University (NYU): Tisch School of the Arts is highly reputed for its Film and Television program. Located in New York City, the school has excellent resources and professional connections. The BFA in Film and Television covers cinematography in addition to directing, producing, and writing.

4. Florida State University (FSU): The College of Motion Picture Arts at FSU has a BFA program where students have designated roles such as directors, producers, writers, and of course, cinematographers. The competitive program is committed to providing substantial production experiences on complex projects.

5. American Film Institute (AFI): This is a bit of an outlier, as AFI mainly offers graduate programs. After a successful undergrad career, their Cinematography discipline in the MFA can be a fantastic option. It's a competitive program that thrives in Los Angeles close to the heart of the industry.

Each of these schools has a different atmosphere and is located in a different part of the country, so I would recommend touring them (virtually or in person) and looking into their respective curriculums to see which one might be the best fit for you. If you know any practicing cinematographers or film teachers, they may also be able to offer more personalized advice based on your specific goals and interests.
