Affinity clubs in college?

Hi everyone! I've been hearing about affinity clubs at colleges, and I'm not exactly sure what they are. Can someone explain what an affinity club is and how it differs from other types of clubs on college campuses?

The primary goal of these clubs is to create a supportive environment where members can connect with one another, share experiences, and foster a sense of belonging within the larger college community.

Affinity clubs differ from other types of clubs on college campuses in their focus and purpose. While other clubs may revolve around academic subjects, sports, or hobbies, affinity clubs have a particular emphasis on promoting understanding and camaraderie among its members. Examples of affinity clubs include clubs centered on ethnicity or heritage (i.e. Black Student Union, Latinx Club), gender (i.e. Women in Science, Men's Resource Center), LGBTQ+ groups (i.e. Pride Alliance, Queer Student Union), and religious or spiritual affiliations (i.e. Hillel, Muslim Student Association).

Participating in an affinity club can be a significant part of one's college experience, fostering personal growth, strengthening a sense of identity, and allowing students to create lasting friendships. Additionally, these clubs often engage in campus-wide events, outreach, or advocacy initiatives that aim to promote diversity and inclusiveness throughout the college community.
