Can international students study and work in the USA?

I'm considering studying in the USA as an international student, but I'm also interested in working while studying. Does anyone know the rules or visa requirements for doing both?

Absolutely. As an international student on an F-1 Visa, you would have the ability to work while studying. However, there are certain regulations that you will need to follow and they can be quite specific.

Firstly, during your first academic year, you're only allowed to work on campus and for a maximum of 20 hours per week while school is in session. You can work up to full-time during holidays and scheduled breaks. This work could be either at an on-campus commercial business, like a bookstore or food service, or it could be at an off-campus location that is educationally affiliated with your school.

Starting from your second academic year, you might be eligible for off-campus employment under certain conditions. One of these off-campus work options is called Curricular Practical Training (CPT) which must be related to your field of study. Another type is Optional Practical Training (OPT) which can be undertaken either pre- or post-completion of your studies, and it also needs to be in your field of study.

To be eligible for CPT or OPT, you have to apply and get authorization from your school's international student office and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It's a straightforward process but does require some paperwork and careful attention to detail to ensure you comply with your visa status. You should always consult with your school's international student office before taking up any off-campus job.

Please keep in mind that working outside the guidelines of your F-1 visa can have serious consequences, so it's very important to understand the rules and follow them closely. Working while studying can be a great opportunity, not only for financial relief but also for gaining practical experience, so long as you remember to maintain balance with your academic responsibilities and stay within the visa regulations.
