I’m getting ready to apply to colleges and want to make sure I’m presenting the best version of myself. What are the key things colleges look for in applicants? How can I make sure I highlight those aspects?

Colleges look for several key components when reviewing applications. Here are some of the main aspects that could help present yourself in the best light:

1. Academic Performance: Metrics such as your GPA, course rigor, and standardized test scores (where applicable) are important parts of the puzzle. They want to see that you've challenged yourself academically and that you can succeed academically in their institution. Top colleges also use the Academic Index, which is a numerical assessment made up of your grades, test scores, and class rank.

2. Extracurricular Involvement: Engagement in activities outside of the classroom allows schools to get a glimpse of your interests, passions, and dedication. Colleges use the Four Tiers of Extracurriculars to assess these activities. They're looking for depth rather than breadth, so pursuing a few activities with high involvement and progression (e.g., leadership roles) is more beneficial than participating in many activities with low levels of involvement.
