What are union trades jobs like, and how can I get into them?

I'm a high school junior considering different paths after graduation, and I'm curious about union trades jobs. What kinds of positions are available, and how do I get started in a union trade? Are there benefits to union work?

Union trades jobs cover a wide range of fields which often involve working with your hands and implementing practical skills. These jobs can be in areas such as construction, plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), and more.

Getting into a union trade often involves completing an apprenticeship, where you receive hands-on training under a journeyman or master in your chosen field. You generally need a high school diploma or GED to start an apprenticeship. As an apprentice, you'll usually be given a wage (often a percentage of the journeyman or master’s rate), and you'll steadily learn the skills and protocols necessary for your chosen trade.

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, which generally takes about 3-5 years, you'll be considered a journeyman in the trade and eligible for full union benefits. You may also be required to pass a licensing or certification exam, depending on your specific trade and the state you live in.

Why choose union work? Unions provide many benefits to their members such as collective bargaining power, which can result in higher wages as well as better job security. Unions can also offer health insurance and retirement plans, and often have resources for additional education, training opportunities, and advancement.

Considering your next steps after high school is a big decision. The trades can offer rewarding careers for those who like working with their hands, enjoy problem-solving, and are interested in a pathway that does not necessarily involve a four-year college degree. Remember to research thoroughly and consider your long-term goals and interests as you make your decision.
