Do colleges know your AP scores?

When considering your application, do colleges automatically see your AP scores, or do I have to send them separately? I'm trying to decide when or if I should report them, especially if I didn't do so well.

No, colleges do not automatically see your AP scores during the admission process. Your AP scores are not included on your high school transcript and colleges won't receive them unless you choose to send them. While AP scores can certainly demonstrate academic prowess in a subject area, keep in mind they aren't as heavily weighted in the admissions process as your grades/rigor of curriculum or standardized test scores.

However, if you do well on an AP exam (a 4 or 5), it can be beneficial to report the scores as it confirms your understanding and mastery of that particular subject. If you didn't score as high as you would have liked, you can opt not to report. Ultimately, a lower AP score doesn't disqualify an otherwise strong candidate. That being said, after you have been admitted, most colleges require the official report from the College Board in order to grant you college credit or place you out of certain courses.

Remember, every student's circumstances are unique, and it may be beneficial to consult with your school counselor to determine the right strategy for you.
