Should I know a programming language before entering college?

I'm interested in a computer science major and wonder if learning a programming language in high school is a must. How beneficial is it to know coding before stepping into college?

Knowing a programming language before stepping into college as a computer science major is beneficial, but not a strict necessity. If you come in with some programming experience, you might find the introductory computer science courses to be easier and more manageable, as you'll already be familiar with the concepts.

Programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, and Java are often taught in introductory college courses. So, having a grasp on these before you start can give you a headstart. It can also free up some of your cognitive resources for mastering more advanced topics later on.

That said, Computer Science is not just about coding, and in some cases, colleges start the curriculum from the basics to keep the playing field level. So you'll still be able to start a Computer Science degree without prior knowledge.

If you have the time and the resources now, I'd recommend trying out a programming course or two online to see if you enjoy it. This could give you a good sense of whether Computer Science is a field that you would be interested in studying further. Remember, it's about more than coding - there are also data structures, algorithms, theory, and systems to learn about.

The bottom line: knowing how to code before you start your degree can make your transition into college a bit smoother, but lack of prior knowledge shouldn't stop you from pursuing a career in computer science. It's the interest, curiosity, and willingness to learn that matter the most.
