Need to know computers before college?

I'm trying to figure out how much I should know about computers before starting college. Is it important to have any specific skills or just basic knowledge? Trying to prepare and wondering what other students think.

It's a great question! Basic computer literacy is generally considered a given in college today, as many aspects of college life, such as registering for classes, submitting assignments, and getting grades, are done online. This encompasses skills like using a word processor (like Microsoft Word or Google Docs), managing emails, and using the internet for research.

Advanced computer skills aren't strictly necessary unless you're going into a computer-related field, like Computer Science or Data Science. However, other skills can be very beneficial depending on your major. For example, students planning on going into the sciences may find it helpful to know how to use Excel for their labs. Students in fields related to design might benefit from knowledge of software like Adobe Photoshop or InDesign.

The most important thing is to be comfortable with technology and have an openness to learning new tools and software. Many colleges have resources available, including workshops or one-on-one tech support, to help students improve their tech skills. But if you feel as though your computer skills are behind where they need to be, or you're particularly worried about it, you could consider doing some self-teaching over the summer. There are many online resources and courses available to help you get up to speed. It might also be worthwhile to reach out to your future school's IT department for their perspective on what might be useful for incoming students.

Remember, there might be a learning curve, but there's help available if you need it. Staying adaptable and willing to learn is the key!
