Going to college but feeling unsure

I'm heading to college soon, but honestly, I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. How did you all figure out what to expect or prepare for this next big step? Any tips for settling in and making the most out of the experience?

First off, kudos to you for acknowledging that this is a big step and trying to gather advice ahead of time. Many people feel a bit lost during their first weeks (or even months) in college, so you're definitely not alone.

One piece of advice I often give students is to familiarize themselves with the resources available at their college - your school's website should have a section detailing student services that you may find helpful. This can include clubs and organizations, on-campus wellness resources, tutoring centers, career services, and so on. Knowing where you can go for support, for academic or personal reasons, can go a long way.

As for settling in, I've found that creating a routine is immensely helpful. Get to know your class schedule and build a day-to-day routine around it. This includes setting good sleep habits, having regular study time, meals, and downtime. You can always adjust it as you go, but having this structure from the start can reduce stress and help you stay balanced.

Making the most out of the college experience really depends on what you want to get out of these next few years. If you're interested in meeting new people and learning new things, joining clubs and organizations on campus that align with your interests can be a great start. They do not all have to be strictly academic in nature; anything from a chess club to a dance troupe can help you meet like-minded people and contribute to a well-rounded experience.

Finally, don't be afraid of asking for help. If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure, reaching out to a trusted professor, your academic advisor, or even a friendly upperclassman can provide much-needed guidance. The most important thing is to take your time, get acclimatized to your new environment, and remember that it's perfectly okay to make mistakes and learn from them. Good luck in your college journey!
