How do colleges check if you're being honest on applications?

I'm filling out my college apps, and I'm wondering: how do colleges verify the information we provide? Like, can they check if extracurriculars and awards are legit? Just trying to make sure I understand the process!

Colleges primarily rely on a level of trust with their applicants while assessing the information provided on the college applications. They anticipate all the information to be accurate and truthful, as providing misleading information can lead to serious consequences, including the rejection of the application or even revocation of an admission offer.

That being said, admissions officers do have methods they can employ if something on an application raises suspicions. Here are a few ways in which information is sometimes verified:

1. Letters of Recommendation: Admissions offices reach out to those who made the recommendation to authenticate the letters. It's more difficult to falsify something if another, separate party also attests to the validity of a claim.

2. High Schools: Admissions offices have relationships with high schools and can contact your school to verify the details of your coursework, grades, and extracurricular activities.

3. Random Checks: Some colleges conduct random checks on applications, contacting the organizations or individuals students reference in their application.

4. Use of Third Parties: Some colleges can hire external agencies to verify certain information. This generally occurs when there's a significant surge in applications or applicants from newer locations.

5. Self-Reporting: Schools often rely on the honor system, and require that students confirm their own extracurricular activities and honors.

Remember that honesty is the best policy. Making false claims not only jeopardizes your admission process but also your integrity, which can follow you throughout your academic and professional journey. It's always best to highlight your authentic achievements and experiences.
