What's it like getting a trade job after high school?

I'm thinking about going the trade school route instead of college. For those who've done it, how's the job market, and what are some good trades to consider?

Job prospects in the trades can be strong, largely due to the fact that many high paying trade jobs are in fields that are currently experiencing a shortage of workers. Trades can be traditionally thought of as jobs like carpenter or electrician, but the range of options is much wider and includes careers from hairstylist to paralegal to respiratory therapist.

One popular trade to consider is welding. The demand for welders is high in various industries, such as the automotive industry, construction, shipbuilding, aerospace, and more. You can expect to earn good wages in welding and there are opportunities for advancement in the field as well.

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technicians are also in high demand. This field requires knowledge of refrigeration, electronics, and airflow, but with ever-advancing technology, HVAC offers a broad range of opportunities as well.

Plumbing is another trade that is always in demand, given that most buildings require functional plumbing. This job can be physically demanding but it provides a good income.

The job market for trade jobs varies depending on the location and the specific trade, so keep that in mind when making your decision. Remember to also consider your personal interests and strengths when choosing a trade; you'll inevitably do better in a trade that you enjoy and that aligns with your skills.

Overall, trade school can be an excellent choice. Not only is it typically less expensive than a four-year degree, but trade school graduates also have a slightly higher rate of employment compared to their degree-holding counterparts.
