What do I need to know for college algebra?

I'm heading to college soon, and I want to prepare for college algebra. Are there specific topics or skills I should brush up on beforehand? I've done well in high school math, but I'm not sure what's most important for college-level courses.

Absolutely, it's a great idea to review key topics before diving into a college algebra class. Here, I can break down the main concepts you're likely to encounter in such a course.

1. Equations & Inequalities: You'll cover linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, as well as how to solve these types of problems. You may also delve into absolute value equations and inequalities and graphing inequalities, which involves shading regions on a graph.

2. Graphs & Functions: Expect to use and manipulate different types of functions, including linear, quadratic, polynomial, and rational functions. You'll also study how to graph these equations, examine their properties (like domain, range, intercepts), and understand transformations like shifts and reflections.

3. Systems of Equations: Solving systems of linear equations, both graphically and algebraically, is a central topic. Techniques include substitution, elimination, and using matrices.

4. Polynomials & Rational Expressions: Here, you’ll work with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing polynomials, as well as factoring them. In addition, expect to simplify, multiply, divide, add, and subtract rational expressions.

5. Exponential & Logarithmic Functions: These include the properties of exponents and logarithms, converting between logarithmic and exponential form, and solving exponential equations using logarithms.

6. Sequences & Series: Sequences are just lists of numbers, while series are the sums of these lists of numbers. You'll work with arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, as well as potentially diving into infinite series.

While each institution and professor might structure their course differently, these are the broad topics you're likely to encounter. Thus, reminding yourself of these areas can give you a head start and create a smoother transition. It's always beneficial to work through old problems or find online resources to practice these skills. But remember, even if you're not an expert at it right away, that's fine. College is all about learning and growing, and you'll have all semester to master these topics.
