What should seniors know before heading off to college?

I'm a high school junior trying to prepare for the transition to college life. What should I be aware of or start planning for during my senior year to have a smooth move to college? Any tips would be great!

That's a great question, and it's commendable that you're thinking ahead about your transition to college. Here are some points you might find helpful:

1. Time Management: The class schedule in college is different from high school. You'll have more flexibility, but also more responsibility to manage your time effectively. It's a good idea to start practicing good time management now if you haven't already. This includes balancing studying, extracurricular activities, and socializing.

2. Finances: Have a basic understanding of managing personal finances. This includes budgeting, opening a bank account, and possibly understanding student loans. Talk to your parents or a trusted advisor about this and seek guidance.

3. Independent Living: Basic life skills can often be overlooked. Things like laundry, basic cooking, managing a budget, and looking after one's mental and physical health are all important.

4. Explore Your Interests: Use this time to explore your interests, both academic and otherwise. The more you understand about what you love spending your time on, the easier it'll be to choose classes, majors, and extracurriculars in college.

5. Networking: Building relationships is crucial in college. This starts with your roommate, and professors, and extends to the wider college community. It's never too early to begin developing your interpersonal skills, as they'll come in handy throughout your college years and beyond.

6. Academic Challenge: College coursework will be more rigorous than high school. Consider challenging yourself a senior year to better prepare for the increased workload. AP or dual-enrollment classes can provide a peek into the demands of college assignments.

Enjoy your senior year of high school, but also use it as a stepping stone to prepare for your upcoming college journey. Being proactive, like you are, will certainly help with the transition. Good luck!
