Studying on an H4 visa with an EAD?

I've heard it's possible to study while on an H4 visa with an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) in the U.S., but I'm not sure about the details. Could anyone provide clarity on this?

Absolutely, individuals holding an H4 visa with an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) can certainly pursue education in the U.S. One thing to note is that H4 visa holders, regardless of whether they have an EAD or not, are allowed to study. The EAD just provides additional benefits.

The H4 visa type is granted to the immediate family members of an H1B Visa holder (spouse and children under 21). As an H4 visa holder, you are permitted to attend school, enroll in a college degree, or take up a course ranging from recreational to vocational. You can pursue both part-time or full-time courses of study.

Getting an EAD with your H4 status allows you to take up employment, which can be very helpful given the high cost of education in the U.S. However, obtaining an EAD doesn't increase your access or eligibility for in-state tuition at public universities - that often has specific requirements around state residency.

Additionally, holding an EAD as an H4 visa holder does not grant you the ability to access Federal Student Aid (FSA). FSA is only available to U.S citizens and eligible non-citizens, which at present does not include H4 visa holders. However, you may still access private scholarships or financial aid provided directly from the educational institution, based on their individual policies.

Remember to maintain your visa status and keep your documents current during your course of study. Consult with your legal advisor or the foreign student office of your educational institution if you have questions or concerns about your specific situation.
