What exactly counts as a trade job?

I'm looking into different career paths and I'm not quite sure what specifically defines a trade job. What kind of positions are considered trade jobs, and what qualifications do they typically require?

A trade job, also known as a skilled trades job or vocational job, refers to a line of work that requires specific training, often through a technical school, community college, apprenticeship, or on-the-job training. It can be contrasted with professional jobs which are often working with ideas or theories, managing people or projects, etc and usually require a four-year degree.

Trade jobs cover a broad spectrum of industries. Some common examples include plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, auto mechanics, carpenters, welders, machinists, and construction workers. Many healthcare roles such as nursing assistants, dental hygienists, and paramedics are also considered trade jobs.

The qualifications for these positions typically involve a combination of post-secondary education at a technical school or community college and hands-on training in the field. This education is very focused on the specific skills needed for the job, as opposed to a more broad education you'd get with a bachelor's degree. Each trade has its own path to proficiency, which could include a formal apprenticeship program. It's also quite common in these fields to work under the supervision of an experienced professional who guides you in learning the industry-specific skills.

Many trade jobs also require the individual to be licensed or certified by a state or national organization. The process for obtaining these can vary by state and trade, but often involves passing a written and practical exam after completing a certain amount of training or apprenticeship. It's worth noting that trade jobs often offer good job security and salary potential due to the consistent demand for these specialized skills.
