What's the trade job market like for teens in California?

I'm considering starting a trade career in California while I'm still in high school. What trade jobs are available for teens here, and would you have any recommendations on where to start looking?

Starting a trade career while in high school is a great option if you're not interested in the traditional college route or want to get a head start in your career. With the current focus on vocational skills and the demand for skilled workers, there's an increasing number of opportunities for teenagers in California.

One of the more accessible trades for high school students is Automotive Technology. Many high schools team up with automotive organizations to offer both academic credit and certification, and in some cases, you might be able to start an apprenticeship.

Culinary Arts and Hospitality are also solid options with significant growth potential. Many restaurants and hotels offer paid kitchen internships or entry-level positions for high school students.

Graphic design is another trade that you might consider. Although it's conventionally thought of as a digital field, the physical aspects of graphic design - printing, formatting, etc. - are equally important and often overlooked.

Landscaping and horticulture can still offer opportunities for those who prefer more physical, outdoor work. Parks services and private landscaping companies may have opportunities for you to learn about plant care, landscape design, and the utilization of various tools and machinery.

In terms of where to start looking, reach out to your school's career guidance counselor. They often have connections with local businesses and organizations that offer internships or part-time jobs for high school students. Additionally, your local community and technical colleges might have resources or programs available that are aimed at high schoolers interested in trades.

Bear in mind, that some industries may have age restrictions due to the equipment used or the nature of the work. Always check age requirements before applying for a job.

Lastly, always strive for at least a high school diploma or GED. Even in trade professions, these are viewed favorably and are sometimes requirements.
