Best Computer Science Schools in NY?

I'm looking to major in computer science and would love to study in New York. What are some of the top colleges in the state for this major? Considering both reputation and campus life.

In New York, you'll find several colleges that are quite renowned and reputable for their programs in Computer Science. Here's a few key options to consider:

1. Columbia University: With its Ivy League reputation, Columbia has a robust computer science program offering a deep theoretical foundation and the opportunity for inter-disciplinary study with other top-notch departments. Campus life in Columbia is equally engaging, being situated in the heart of one of the liveliest parts of Manhattan.

2. New York University (NYU): NYU's Courant Institute is well known for its strong programs in Computer Science. Program offerings range from theory to systems and applications. As for the campus life, it's as vibrant as the city itself, with plenty of opportunities for socializing, cultural events, and internships.

3. Cornell University: While Cornell is located a few hours' drive north in Ithaca, its Computer Science program is one of the best nationwide. Class size is generally small, providing opportunity for close interaction with faculty. Social activities abound in Ithaca, with a thriving downtown area, a number of beautiful state parks for hiking and exploring, and on-campus concerts, lectures, and sports both in Ithaca and in Cornell Tech in New York City.

4. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI): Known for just about everything technology, RPI's computer science curriculum is comprehensive with a focus on practical applications and results. Campus life offers a wealth of clubs and organizations. Troy, New York, is full of history, culture, and outdoor activities.

5. University at Buffalo (SUNY): With well-rounded programs that focus on both the theory and practice of computer science, this is a great choice for a public university option. Campus life is quite dynamic as well with numerous on-campus events and activities.

When considering any of these universities, I recommend taking the time to visit the campuses (if possible) or attending virtual tours, checking out CS research and faculty, reaching out to current students in the CS program, and exploring surrounding city life to get a feel for the academic and social environment. Also remember that while reputation is important, you should primarily consider compatibility factors like class size, specific coursework, and community culture when deciding where you want to study.
