Are trade jobs under threat from AI?

I've read a lot about AI disrupting various industries, but are trade jobs like electricians or plumbers at risk? I'm considering pursuing a trade after high school and want to know if it's a stable path.

Trade jobs are known for their hands-on, technical nature which largely involves dealing with physical systems and equipment. As such, while AI and automation are expected to impact many industries, particularly those where work is routine or can be easily automated, the impact on trade jobs might be slightly different.

Jobs like electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and HV/AC technicians often require nuanced understanding of diverse situations, problem-solving, and fine motor skills to get tasks done effectively – these are areas where current AI technology hasn't been able to fully replicate human abilities. For example, each plumbing job is unique and requires distinct troubleshooting abilities and expertise, something AI currently isn't sophisticated enough to replicate.

However, it's worth noting that AI isn't necessarily about replacing jobs, but also about transforming them. AI, for instance, can assist with diagnostic tasks or automate routine paperwork, allowing tradespeople to focus more on the skilled aspects of their work.

Therefore, at this point in time, trade jobs appear to have a relatively low risk of being completely overtaken by AI. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean the sector won't evolve and integrate new technologies. Workers that are willing to adopt new technologies as tools may find their jobs evolving rather than disappearing.

Remember, going into trades also has several benefits such as less time in school, incurring less student debt, and often a strong demand for skilled labor. Therefore, it's still a worthwhile path to consider even in the face of advancing technology! You just might find your toolbox contains a few more digital devices in the future.
