What's the difference between NYU Early Decision 1 and 2?

I'm considering applying to NYU but I'm confused about the distinction between Early Decision 1 and Early Decision 2. Besides the dates, what are the other differences and how might each affect my application strategy?

Sure, I'm happy to clarify that. Both Early Decision I (ED I) and Early Decision II (ED II) are binding agreements - if you're accepted, you agree to attend NYU and withdraw all other college applications. The primary difference between the two rounds is timing.

For Early Decision I, the deadline is typically in November, and students hear back in mid-December. This option allows applicants to demonstrate their passion for NYU early in the application cycle, and complete the admissions process faster if accepted.

Early Decision II, on the other hand, offers a second chance for students who decide a bit later that NYU is their first choice. The deadline for ED II is typically in January, with decision notifications coming in mid-February.

Regarding your strategy, it ultimately depends on your readiness and certainty about NYU being your top choice. If you're sure about NYU and have your application completed early, ED I can be a good option. ED II, meanwhile, might be better for those who perhaps realized NYU is their top choice a little later, or who need more time to polish up their application.

Remember: since both Early Decision I and II are binding agreements, they should only be chosen if you're completely certain that NYU is the school for you.
