How does Early Decision 2 compare to Early Decision 1?

I'm weighing my options between applying through Early Decision 2 or sticking with Early Decision 1. Does anyone have insights on how they compare, particularly in terms of admission chances or strategy?

Early Decision 1 (ED1) and Early Decision 2 (ED2) are both binding agreements. If you're accepted, you are required to enroll and withdraw all other college applications. The main difference between the two is the timeline.

ED1 deadlines are typically in early November, with decisions released in mid-December. ED2, on the other hand, usually has a deadline in early January, with decisions released in mid-February.

What throws students off sometimes is the relatively short window of time between the two rounds. Depending on the schools you're interested in, the ED2 deadline could be mere weeks after you hear back from your ED1 schools.

As for admissions chances, there is generally a boost in both ED1 and ED2 rounds, compared to Regular Decision. The ‘boost’ varies between different colleges and universities, so it's important to research each individual school. Applying ED is likely to result, on average, in a 1.6x or a 60% increase in your chances of admission, although this exact percentage can vary by school.

In terms of strategy, consider ED1 for your absolute first choice school. If you get in, great! If not, you still have the chance to use your ED2 option for another top-choice. Remember, though, that you should only apply ED to a school if you're 100% committed to attend if accepted, and if you've verified that the college is affordable for you and your family (for instance, by using the school's Net Price Calculator).

Finally, keep your high school counselor in the loop about your decision, as they might have some insights about how students from your school have fared in the past with ED applications.

So by opting for ED1 or ED2, you get the chance to show a college that it is your top choice, which can be a beneficial strategy for students who are certain about where they want to attend.
