Emory University ED 2: What Are My Odds?

Emory University is my dream school, and I'm considering applying Early Decision 2. Does anyone know if there’s a substantial acceptance rate benefit or other factors I should consider?

Applying Early Decision (ED) can provide a significant edge in college admissions. While acceptance rates can fluctuate each year and aren't published for each round of admission for most schools, including Emory University, historical trends do show that applying ED can boost an applicant's chances.

On average, applying ED usually results in a 1.6x or a 60% increase in chances of admission to super selective schools. Remember, the benefit becomes less pronounced the less selective the school is. This means that in the super selective admissions landscape, ED could make a significant difference for a borderline candidate.

However, keep in mind the binding nature of Early Decision. If you apply ED and are accepted, you are expected to withdraw all other college applications and enroll at Emory. This can have financial implications. Before applying ED, you should use Emory University's Net Price Calculator to get an estimate of the financial aid package you might receive, to ensure it's a financially feasible option for you and your family.

The exception is if you receive an inadequate financial aid award—you can then break the ED agreement, but this is a significant process and shouldn't be counted on as a common possibility. Also, consider if you are academically ready to apply by the ED 2 deadline and if you feel your current application is the strongest it could be, or if you think waiting for Regular Decision could improve your application (via first semester senior year grades, for instance).

So, if Emory is your top choice and you are financially secure with whatever aid package you receive, ED II could be a good strategy to demonstrate your interest and commitment to the school and possibly boost your chances of acceptance. If you have any other questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask!
