What’s the difference between Early Decision and Early Decision 2?

I’m confused about ED and ED2 in the college application process. How are these different in terms of deadlines and commitments? Is one option generally better or offers a higher chance of acceptance?

These two application options, Early Decision (ED) and Early Decision II (ED2), functions similarly, but with a key difference in their timeline.

Early Decision typically allows applicants to submit their materials by November, and you'll usually receive your acceptance or rejection letter in mid-December. This plan is binding, meaning if you get admitted, you commit to enrolling in that school, and withdraw all applications sent to other colleges.

On the other hand, Early Decision II allows applicants extra time to decide which college is their top choice. Deadlines for this occur later, commonly around January with decisions typically released by February. Like ED, ED2 agreement is binding.

As for which option might offer a higher chance of acceptance - it varies by school and can depend on the applicant pool for that specific year. Traditionally speaking, both ED and ED2 can offer a minor admissions advantage because colleges appreciate the demonstrated interest and the assurance that admitted students will attend.

That said, both are binding commitments, so it's important for students to carefully consider their top choice, and also their financial situation. You should have a clear interest in the school and be comfortable with the potential financial commitment because while there is a potential possibility to back out of the ED or ED2 agreement due to financial strain, it's not a recommended strategy. Use the net price calculator of the school to get an estimated view of your potential financial aid package.
