Macalester and Early Decision 2: worth it?

Macalester is one of my top choices, and I'm considering applying to ED2. I'm hoping to hear from those who chose this path—what advantages did you find, and do you think it boosted your admission chances?

When considering applying ED2, a few things can tip the scales in its favor. For one, ED2 can absolutely boost your admissions chances at a school.

Also, applying ED2 shows a significant commitment to the college in question—in this case, Macalester. Colleges like to accept students who they know will attend, which can positively impact their yield rate, an important factor in college rankings. The only difference between ED2 and ED1 for Macalester College is the due date for the application.

However, it's equally important to ensure that it is really your top choice and you'd be content attending without the comparison of other admission offers in hand. Affordability is another key aspect to consider given that Early Decision is a binding agreement—if you're accepted, you're expected to enroll, barring any significant financial aid issues.

Finally, waiting to apply for ED2 can have benefits too. If you need the first part of senior year to boost your academic record further, ED2 buys you that time. It also affords you the ability to apply elsewhere ED1 or EA without foreclosing those options if Macalester is still your first choice.
