Choosing SMU Early Decision 2

I'm considering applying Early Decision 2 at SMU, but I'm unsure about the commitment. Has anyone here gone through this process and could share their insights?

Sure thing, I can provide some insight. Applying Early Decision 2 (ED2) is a binding agreement, meaning that if you're accepted you have already committed to attending. This is the reason it has a higher admission likelihood than other types of applications - the university is confirming enrollment spaces during that round.

When you apply ED2 to a university, you're telling them that they are your top choice and that if admitted, you will definitely attend. ED2, like Early Decision 1 (ED1), can give an applicant an advantage due to this commitment. On average, it could result in a 1.6x or a 60% increase in your chances of admission.

However, you should only apply ED2 if you are entirely sure SMU is the best fit for you. This includes considering the social environment, academic programs, location, and importantly, financial fit.

Financial considerations are especially important for ED2 candidates. If you are awarded insufficient financial aid from SMU, you could potentially be stuck in a financial dilemma as you’ve already agreed to attend if accepted.

To help avoid this situation, I recommend you and your family use SMU's net price calculator to get an estimation of the potential financial aid package and cost of attendance. Check your financial situation carefully before committing.

It's definitely a big decision to make, so weigh your options carefully. If you are completely sure about SMU and it aligns with your academic, social, and financial needs, then ED2 can be a good strategy.
