Submitting two Early Decisions: Is it possible?

Can I actually submit two Early Decision applications to different colleges, or is that against the rules? I'm worried about making the wrong choice and want to cover my bases.

While it's completely understandable to want to have more opportunities at hand, applying Early Decision constitutes a binding agreement between you and the college. When you apply ED, you're essentially committing to attending that college if admitted. This is why schools typically only allow you to submit one Early Decision application.

If you apply ED to one school and then decide to also apply ED to another, it could lead to some significant consequences if both schools find out. Colleges communicate with each other, and if they discover that you've applied ED to multiple places, both applications could be rescinded.

However, some colleges offer Early Decision II plans. These allow you to apply ED at one college, and if you are not admitted or deferred, you can then apply ED II to another.

Additionally, you can apply to one college Early Decision and others Early Action, provided the Early Action programs are not stringent single-choice or restrictive EA programs.

To avoid confusion, check out the specific admissions policies of the schools you are interested in, and consider discussing your options with a teacher, counselor, or someone knowledgeable about the college admissions process. They can help you make a more informed decision about where and how to apply.
