What's the difference between Early Decision I and II?

I'm trying to understand the difference between Early Decision I and II. How do the application timelines and potential advantages differ? Should I consider ED II if I miss the deadline for ED I?

Early Decision (ED) I and II are very similar in terms of what they entail. In both, you're making a binding commitment to attend the school if you're admitted. The primary difference between the two is timing.

For Early Decision I, the deadline is usually in November, and you'll typically hear back from the school in December. If you apply ED I, you'll need to have all your application materials ready earlier than most applicants.

On the other hand, Early Decision II has later deadlines, typically in January, and you'll hear back in February. This option can be a good choice for students who need a little extra time to fine-tune their applications or who decide later in the application process that there's one school they prefer above all others.

In terms of potential advantages, applying ED (whether I or II) can boost your chances of admission somewhat, as colleges appreciate the demonstrated interest and commitment. That being said, both should be used judiciously, as the commitment is binding (aside from a few exceptions, such as if the college's financial aid package is insufficient). ED II can be a good option if you miss the deadline for ED I or if you don't get admitted to your ED I school.

Remember, because this is a binding decision, it should be a school that's your top choice and one that you've researched thoroughly, including its financial aid policies.
