Careers as a business analyst: What do they do?

I'm thinking about going into business but unsure of the specific roles. Can anyone explain what a business analyst does and what the job prospects look like in that field?

A Business Analyst (BA) is a bridge between the business side and the technical side of an organization. Business Analysts work to interpret and analyze business needs and further translate them into technical specifications so that companies can improve processes, services, software, and products.

Primarily, business analysts are involved in the following activities:

1. Gathering and documenting business requirements: A large part of the role involves speaking to stakeholders to understand their needs and priorities. This could include conducting workshops, interviews, surveys, etc.

2. Creating and validating functional specifications: BA's take the requirements they've gathered and create detailed business and functional requirements for the technical team to work from.

3. Guiding the solution through development and implementation: Once the tech team takes over, Business Analysts often assist in overseeing the progress, ensuring the solution developed is aligning with the initial requirements.

4. Structuring and managing user acceptance testing (UAT): Before a solution is rolled out, BAs often help structure testing processes to ensure the solution works as intended, and manage any changes or corrections that may need to be made.

5. Training and supporting users: If there's a new software tool, for instance, BAs will often help train users so they can utilize it effectively.

As for job prospects, the demand for business analyst roles is quite substantial because many organizations are recognizing the value of aligning their technical capabilities with their business objectives. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that management analyst jobs (which include business analysts) will grow 11% from 2023-2033, much faster than the average for all occupations.

In terms of career progression, business analysts can eventually move into project management, specialize into a specific field like data analysis, or even transition into a C-suite role such as a Chief Information Officer (CIO). The career path really allows for a lot of flexibility depending on where your interests lie.
