What does an animal technician do?

I'm interested in working with animals and came across the job of an animal technician. Could anyone tell me what this role involves? I'd like to know more about the daily tasks and any specific training required.

An animal technician, often found in research laboratories, works primarily with the care of animals used in scientific and medical research. Daily tasks usually include feeding animals, cleaning and disinfecting cages and work areas, sterilizing lab and surgical equipment, and providing post-operative care for animals if necessary. They also monitor and document animals’ behavior, physical condition, and breeding activities, making sure to observe any signs of illness or distress.

Animal technicians may also provide assistance during experimental procedures, help with the administration of medication, or collect samples like blood or urine specimens. Furthermore, they are usually responsible for maintaining necessary supplies, such as feed, bedding, and personal protective equipment.

In terms of the specific training required to be an animal technician, it can vary depending upon the complexity of the tasks they will be doing. A high school diploma or GED is often sufficient for entry-level positions. However, for more specialized roles, especially those involving more complex procedures or larger animals, an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in a related field like biology or animal science may be necessary.
