What's Involved in an Engineer's Job?

Engineering sounds like a great career path, but there are so many types. Can someone explain the general responsibilities an engineer might have, and what high school subjects are most important to focus on for this field?

The role of an engineer can indeed vary greatly! However, some common responsibilities can include designing, building, and testing systems or structures, developing solutions to complex problems, and ensuring projects meet applicable laws and standards. Engineers typically work in teams and need to be able to communicate their ideas clearly, both verbally and in technical reports or specifications.

Of course, each type of engineering focuses on a different area. For example, civil engineers may design buildings or bridges, while electrical engineers work on the design and development of electrical systems and electrical equipment. Mechanical engineers focus on machines and mechanical devices, and software engineers develop and maintain software systems.

Regarding high school subjects, it's crucial to have a strong foundation in math and sciences. Physics, in particular, can be really important. Math classes, especially calculus, can give you a good understanding of fundamental concepts. Chemistry is also beneficial for certain types of engineering.

Courses in technology or computer programming are very useful too, particularly for fields like software engineering. It could also be beneficial to take design or architectural drafting courses if your school offers them and if you're interested in civil or architectural engineering.

Outside of these core classes, don't forget your English and communication courses. Being able to express your ideas clearly in written communications is necessary in almost every engineering field, as many engineers have to write reports, give presentations, or collaborate with a team.

Lastly, participating in extracurricular activities such as robotics club, science olympiad, or coding competitions can provide valuable hands-on experience and demonstrate dedication to the field. Plus, these activities can give you insight into what it's like to apply engineering concepts to real-world challenges.
