Curious about what jobs a pharmacist really does?

Pharmacy has been on my mind as a possible career, but I'm not sure what pharmacists do beyond filling prescriptions. What are their responsibilities, and what should I know if I'm considering this field?

Absolutely, glad to share more about what a career in pharmacy entails! The role of a pharmacist often goes beyond just dispensing medicines as prescribed by doctors. They're considered one of the most accessible healthcare professionals, often providing advice to patients on the safe use of medications as a primary responsibility. This can include informing patients about potential side effects, interactions with other drugs, proper storage and handling, and how to take their medication effectively.

Further, pharmacists can conduct health screenings, manage chronic diseases in collaboration with physicians, and offer health and wellness advice. There's a growing landscape of clinical, consultative, and administrative roles - where pharmacists work alongside doctors in hospitals, help in formulating healthcare policies, or collaborate with pharmaceutical companies for drug development, research, and safety.

Many also offer extra services such as flu vaccinations, smoking cessation support, blood pressure monitoring, and more. Additionally, specialist pharmacists can work in settings like oncology, infectious diseases, and mental health - advising on medicine selection, dosage, and monitoring.

If considering this field, keep in mind that it typically requires a four-year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree, following undergraduate studies. Pharm.D. programs often involve internships or co-ops, which provide hands-on experience. Following that, you'll need to pass two state licensing exams. It's a field requiring rigorous education, strong interpersonal and analytical skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning due to ever-changing medicinal practices and drugs.

Remember, to explore all aspects of a pharmacy career before deciding. Consider job shadowing pharmacists or engaging in internships to gain firsthand experience, it often provides valuable insights.
