Exploring the role of a Business Analyst

I've been looking into business-related careers and came across business analysts. What exactly does a business analyst do, and what kind of skills should I focus on developing if I'm interested in this path?

A Business Analyst (BA) essentially acts as a bridge between business entities and Information Technology (IT) departments, focusing on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization. They perform a thorough analysis of an organization or business domain and document its business processes or systems, assessing the business model or its integration with technology.

In terms of tasks and responsibilities, a BA might be responsible for data analysis and forecasting, conducting meetings and presentations to share ideas and findings, defining strategies, process modeling, project planning and management, and budget development, to name a few areas.

Communication and listening are two vital abilities for a BA. You need to interpret and translate the needs of the business to a format that can be comprehended and executed by IT teams. Additionally, you need to possess strong problem-solving skills to analyze a situation and provide the best solutions.

Technical skills are also necessary to some extent as a BA, including proficiency in modeling tools (like Microsoft Visio or Gliffy), databases, and SQL. An understanding of various project management methodologies (i.e., Agile, Waterfall, Scrum) can also prove beneficial in this role, and analytical tools like Tableau or Excel may often be used in your work.

This career path often values a strong foundation in business and IT, so coursework or training in areas like management information systems, business administration, or computer science could be beneficial.
