What's the deal with UVA's early action deferral?

I applied early action to UVA and am worried about getting deferred. Does anyone know how common it is for UVA to defer early action applicants?

The University of Virginia (UVA) employs a policy for its Early Action (EA) application process where a select number of applicants might not receive an outright decision of acceptance or rejection, but instead are deferred to the Regular Decision (RD) pool. While UVA does not publicly disclose the specific percentages of deferred students, anecdotal evidence suggests that it does occur to a noticeable portion of EA applicants.

It's important to note that a deferral isn't a rejection - it simply means that UVA wants to review your application in the context of its entire applicant pool. If you're deferred, it's a good idea to submit any new and significant information (like improved senior grades or new awards) to UVA once it becomes available.

While being deferred can feel disappointing, remember that many students who are deferred from Early Action do get admitted in the Regular Decision round, so there's still a good chance of receiving a positive outcome. Maintain a positive mindset and hope for the best!
