What Should I Do if I'm Denied in Early Decision?

If I apply early decision and get rejected, what's my next step? Should I quickly apply to more schools or follow up with the admissions office to ask for feedback? Any advice from those who've been in the same boat?

Firstly, I understand this scenario might be disappointing, but it's crucial not to lose hope. Coming back stronger will provide you with more opportunities. Start by taking a day or two to grapple with your emotions, then get right back into the flow of things.

Following up with the admissions office for feedback is not usually productive as most universities have policies against providing specific feedback due to the volume of applications they receive. However, some schools may offer some generalized feedback on request.

Once that's done, consider your other college options. Applying regular decisions to more colleges should be high on your list. If you had applied early, chances are you would have completed most of your college applications by January 1, which is when many regular decision deadlines close. If not, then focus on getting your remaining applications completed and submitted as soon as possible.

In the meantime, continue your studies and extracurriculars with zeal. Maintaining or even improving your academic and extracurricular record in your senior year will make you a stronger candidate for the colleges you apply to next. It could also open up additional scholarship opportunities.

Lastly, focus on colleges where you'll truly thrive, not just schools with big names or top rankings. Many students end up happier at their second or third-choice schools than they would have been at their first-choice school because they choose schools where they would genuinely be a good fit.

And remember, college is just the beginning. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to succeed and make your mark, so keep your head high. You've got this!
